What do you really need from a park? Wide-open green space, a trail to walk on, maybe some recreational infrastructure. Duke’s East Campus has all this, plus it’s conveniently located in the middle of the city. There’s a sand volleyball court, a 1.5-mile jogging path running parallel to the waist-high wall that encircles the campus, and plenty of space to lie out with a book and a blanket. (Need some picnic essentials? Pop into the Whole Foods just across Broad Street.) Some afternoons, watching fresh, young Duke faces come and go, we wonder whether somebody might come up to us and demand proof that we are affiliated with the school in some way. In that case, the story we’re going with is that we’re adjunctbut so far nobody’s seemed to mind.
