Jessica Breland led the way with 18 points, including a tip-in in the final minute that turned out to provide the clinching points, and nine rebounds as No. 8 UNC held off Boston College 84-83 in women’s basketball.

The win improved the Tar Heels to 15-1, 1-1 in ACC play, while BC fell to 13-3 with the loss in its conference opener.

Italee Lucas added 17 points, Chay Shegog 16 and Cetera DeGraffenreid 10 for the Tar Heels, who outrebounded the Eagles 39-30.

Kerri Shields led BC with 18 points including six 3-pointers, while Stefanie Murphy chipped in 14 points with 13 rebounds. Kristen Doherty added 13 points and Carolyn Swords 11 for the Eagles.
