Elliot Johnson led the charge with three hits, including an RBI double in a four-run eighth inning, as the Durham Bulls opened their four-game road series against the Syracuse Chiefs with a 4-0 victory.
Things didn’t go as well for the Carolina Mudcats on Friday night, as they fell 13-4 in the finale of their five-game road set with the Jacksonville Suns, who clubbed a Southern League record-tying seven homers in the game.
The Bulls play the second game against Syracuse on Saturday, then two more before returning home on Tuesday night against the Buffalo Bisons.
The Mudcats open a five-game series at Chattanooga on Saturday night.
Bulls 4, Syracuse 0
J.J. Furmaniak’s two-run double was the big hit in the Bulls’ winning rally, which made a winner out of Mike Ekstrom (2-0).
Jeremy Hellickson had a quality start in the no-decision, allowing five hits in six innings with five walks against four strikeouts.
Jason Bergmann (2-2) took the loss.
Jacksonville 13, Mudcats 4
Mark Saccomanno hit three homers for five RBI to lead the Suns’ record-tying attack.
Mike Stanton added three hits including his league-leading 21st homer of the year for Jacksonville.
Kyle Gunderson (1-0) was the winning pitcher, while Matt Fairel (0-2) took the loss.
Dave Sappelt led the Mudcats with three hits including a solo homer.
