Sean Henry’s eighth-inning homer gave the Mudcats a 3-2 win over the Jacksonville Suns in the opener of their doubleheader at Five County Stadium before the visitors came back to win a 4-3 squeaker in the nightcap.
Meanwhile the Durham Bulls weren’t quite able to complete a comeback on the road, dropping their third straight decision in a 5-3 loss to the Toledo Mud Hens.
The Mudcats complete their five-game set against Jacksonville in the finale of their homestand tonight.
The Bulls will have to get up early, taking on the Mud Hens in one of those “Education Day” morning specials.
Mudcats 3, Jacksonville 2 (8 innings)
Henry finished with a homer and a double to lead the Mudcats and help Joe Krebs (2-1) claim the win in relief.
Chris Denove doubled and singled with an RBI for Carolina while Dave Sappelt added a double and a single.
Former Mudcat Todd Doolittle (2-1) took the loss.
Osvaldo Martinez had three hits including a pair of doubles for the Suns while Matt Dominguez homered.
Jacksonville 4, Mudcats 3
Brandon Tripp had a double and three singles for an RBI while Dominguez chipped in three hits with two RBI for Jacksonville.
Eric Eymann doubled and singled for Carolina.
Alex Sanabia (4-0) was the winning pitcher while Dallas Buck (3-4) took the loss.
Toledo 5, Bulls 3
Deik Scram tripled, doubled and singled for a pair of RBI to spark Toledo, which also got a pair of doubles with an RBI from Jeff Frazier.
Joe Dillon doubled and singled while Alvin Colina and Chris Richard each had RBI doubles for Durham, which scored all of its runs in the ninth inning.
L.J. Gagnier (1-1) was the winning pitcher while Carlos Hernandez (3-2) took the loss.
