Quarterbacks ruled the day in Duke’s 60-play scrimmage this morning.
Thaddeus Lewis (pictured), Sean Renfree and Sean Schroeder combined to complete 23 of 39 passes for 231 yards and a touchdown and put a smile on the face of coach David Cutcliffe.
“We did a lot of good things out there today,” Cutcliffe said. “Of course I am anxious to see the tape, but I thought we had some guys make plays on both sides of the ball. We were able to get the young players a lot of work as we continue to evaluate their status.”
Three-year starter Lewis completed nine of 18 passes for 96 yards, while redshirt freshman Renfree was 11-for-18 for 120 yards and a touchdown.
The TD pass was to freshman Conner Vernon, who led the receivers with four catches for 44 yards while classmate Tyree Watkins caught four for 43.
The running game wasn’t spectacular, but redshirt senior Re’quan Boyette, who missed last season with injuries after leading the 2006 and ’07 teams in rushing, had five totes for 15 yards with a 1-yard touchdown.
Junior defensive end Jeremy Ringfield had one interception and one quarterback sack.
Paul Asack had a 41-yard field goal.
