The Wolfpack’s comeback attempt came up short in a 38-31 loss at Maryland, assuring that Florida State will represent the Atlantic Division against Coastal champion Virginia Tech in the Dec. 4 game in Charlotte.
Danny O’Brien passes for a career-high 417 yards and four touchdowns for the Terps (8-4, 5-3 ACC), with Torrey Smith hauling in all four touchdown passes.
No. 21 NCSU, which will await its bowl assignment, finished the regular season with the same record as the Terps.
The redshirt freshman O’Brien completed 33 of 478 passes, while Smith finished with a career-high 14 catches for 224 yards and became the first Terp to catch four touchdown passes in a single game.
Russell Wilson completed 31 of 60 passes for 311 yards for the Wolfpack, passing for two touchdowns and rushing for two more.
He scored on a 1-yard run with 2:39 to go to make it 38-24, and then connected with James Washington on an eight-yard touchdown pass at 1:16 after State recovered the ensuing onside kick. But the last onside kick went the Terps’ way.
