For all the films that rightly persecute the food industry for disregarding environmental and ethical issues in the name of profit, there are not many that consider the dangerous assumptions activists might ensnare themselves in if their ideology begins to overtake the scientific consensus. In the age of fake news, Food Evolution, a documentary by Academy-Award-nominated director Scott Hamilton Kennedy, parses the complicated and polarizing GMO debate with views from both sides of the aisle. The always insightful and uncompromisingly data-driven astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson serves as the film’s narrator. His now-famous quote on Real Time with Bill Maher, “The good thing about science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it,” could serve as the film’s symbolic center. A panel discussion with Anastasia Bodnar, Fred Gould, and Michelle Schroeder-Moreno, all experts in the field of food science and bioengineering, will follow the screening.
