Gerrit Cole of UCLA struck out eight while Miami’s Yasmani Grandal (pictured) swung a big bat Friday night as the Blues defeated the Reds 5-2 in a USA Baseball National Team intrasquad.

A two-run homer from Kansas’ Tony Thompson provided the only scoring for the Reds, in a game played at the National Training Complex in Cary.

The Blues responded with four runs in the sixth, with the key hits being RBI doubles from Grandal and Wright State’s Casey McGrew and an RBI single from Rice’s Rick Hague.

The team has another intrasquad tonight at 7 at the NTC, in preparation for its first game against outside opposition against Canada on Thursday night in Cary.
