CREATIONEvolution may be the “biggest single idea in the history of thought” (per the title screen), but how to film it? The makers of Creation chose to focus on the writing of The Origin of Species, which left them scant cinematic raw material, consisting as it did of bouts of book-writing interrupted by stomach problems and walks through the woods. Darwin’s disagreements with his pious wife and the neighborhood pastor are scripted to bear the weight of the historical importance of his theory, as is the illness of his cherished eldest daughter. Silly dream sequences and a standard-issue, heavy-handed score push the drama past its breaking point, into melodrama. Rated PG-13. MM

FISH TANKEarly scenes in English filmmaker Andrea Arnold’s drama establish that 15-year-old Mia (Katie Jarvis) has few friends, skips school and loves to dance: Hip-hop is her specialty, and she has a secret abandoned space on the top floor of an apartment building that she uses for practice. Mia lives in the waterfront town of Tilbury with her younger sister and Joanne (Kierston Wareing), her scarcely older mother, a tarty blonde who is rapidly going to seed. Mia’s mom brings home a new boyfriend, Connor (Michael Fassbender), and Mia, though initially hostile, warms up to him as he shows parental interest. But of course, it won’t stop there. Jarvis is an first-time actor; she handles her character’s limited emotional palette well enough, but it’s the veterans Wareing and Fassbender who make Fish Tank succeed as a sure-footed snapshot of an adolescent girl’s unpromising life. GREEN ZONEDirector Paul Greengrass (Bourne Ultimatum, United 93) tackles Iraq in his newest film. Starring Matt Damon. Rated R.

OUR FAMILY WEDDINGThis rebooted Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is a racist rom-com for a supposedly post-racial society. The premise sounds promising enough: A Latino family and an African-American family must get acquainted and overcome their cultural differences as their respective children Lucia (America Ferrera) and Marcus (Lance Gross) announce their plans to wed. But, a film that features a goat on Viagra? That has not one but two wedding-cake food fights? A film where a vase, if described as valuable, must be broken? Director Rick Famuyiwa hasn’t a clue how to shoot even a simple conversation and when in doubt, he reverts to dumbass slapstick that makes Abbott and Costello’s shtick look like Oscar Wilde. Plus, talk about fantasy! Only in the movies can one pull off an elaborate wedding in three weeks. Rated PG-13. Read our review. LB

REMEMBER MEVampire heartthrob Robert Pattinson reaches for, and misses, the mantle of James Dean. In pre-9/11 New York, Tyler is a wayward 20-something who spurns his family’s money because he blames his father for his brother’s suicide. Enter delicate and damaged college student Alyssa (Emilie de Ravin), who struggles with her baggage while falling in love with Tyler. The plot has its compelling moments, but Pattinson, who has little more to offer than nice hair and brooding sultriness, makes every scene seem painfully awkward and contrived. Rated PG-13. BD

SHE’S OUT OF MY LEAGUECan a smokin’ hot 10 ever be with a mediocre five? That’s the question the puny Pittsburgh protagonist of She’s Out Of My League sets out to answer. After meeting babe Molly (Alice Eve) at the airport security checkpoint, TSA agent and super-geek Kirk (Jay Baruchel) can’t believe his good fortune when he finds out that she might actually be into him. Fueled by his friends’ insistence that there’s no way a girl that hot could ever go for a “moodle” (man poodle) like him, he begins to sabotage the best thing that’s ever happened to him. Out of My League is reminiscent in the best ways of other recent good-hearted gross-out comedies like The 40-Year Old Virgin, and Baruchel manages to be likeable, charming and uncool at the same time. Rated R. BD

2010 ACADEMY AWARD-NOMINATED SHORTSOf particular note in this year’s Oscar shorts competition is that all the nominees are foreign. A couple deal with serious themes, such as Russian-language film The Door, which concerns Chernobyl, and the Australian Miracle Fish, which tells a tale of terrorism in schools. Others are cute and quirky, such as Irish Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty, about an eccentric grandma creepily retelling the fairy tale; the Spanish The Lady and the Reaper, which follows an old lady trying to reunite with her long-lost love; and the French film French Roast, about a businessman who can’t pay his café bill. A particular standout is the Swedish Instead of Abracadabra, about a wayward magician still living with his parents. Wallace and Gromit return with A Matter of Loaf and Death, but it’s another French animated effort, Logorama, that brings in the guffaws with its clever use of corporate logos and characters as its protagonists. The Carolina will show the films on two bills: The animated program is 68 minutes, while the live-action “shorts” program is a whopping 154 minutes. Not rated. BD

ALICE IN WONDERLANDThere is a lot about Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland that’s curiouser and curiouser, but just not much “muchness.” It is a phantasmagorical fever dream that is both absorbing and banal. Burton has always embraced the sentiment behind Alice’s query, “What is the use of a book, without pictures or conversations?” There is wonder in the film’s unrelenting visual design, comic spark and intriguing voice work particularly impressive is the trippy cool of Rickman and Fry, while Christopher Lee is instantly recognizable as the Jabberwocky’s resonant baritone. But, it is a sense of awe not shared by the surprisingly aplomb Alice. Burton’s 3D pictorial of a young woman’s arrested development and reluctant embrace of adulthood belies the fact that Alice’s entire time underground is spent having one creature after another tell her where to go and what to do. The pleasingly zany spectacle of it all comes at the expense of the story’s soul. Rated PG. NM

AVATARThe hardest thing to stomach about Avatar is James Cameron’s delusion thatwith a few possible exceptionsthere is nothing to laugh about in this schmaltzy, wanna-be epic about an ex-marine who falls in love with a giant blue cartoon. Self-serious and chock full of New Age hokum, Avatar is trippier in the scenes that take place on the military base, where 3-D effects give the film an eerie ground-shifting feel, than it is in its fantasyland of the planet Pandora, where giant blue humanoids prance around in faux-hippie jewelry and make feline hissing sounds when they’re angry. Many Oscar nominations for this one. Rated PG-13. NG

THE BLIND SIDEAnother sanctimonious tale masquerading as story of hope and inspiration. Sandra Bullock is the matriarch of a well-heeled Memphis family that becomes guardians to a homeless teenage man-child, Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron), in hopes of improving his life, grades and, oh by the way, his chances at a college scholarship. Oscar win for Bullock. Rated PG-13. NM

BLOOD DONE SIGN MY NAMEBased on the acclaimed memoir and history book by Duke University scholar Tim Tyson, the racially motivated murder of Henry “Dickie” Marrow and the resistance movement that flowed out of it onto the streets of Oxford, N.C. still packs a wallop 40 years later. Writer-director (and N.C. native) Jeb Stuart retools Tyson’s sweeping thesis into a two-part narrative: The opening act focuses on Tim’s father, the Rev. Vernon Tyson (Rick Schroder), a Methodist minister whose efforts to foster racial integration from the pulpit were met with strong resistance; the second half chronicles Marrow’s murder, the subsequent sham trial and the unrest that followed. Despite a commendable focus on the African-American perspective, Stuart’s directorial presentation is as rote as a made-for-TV movie and does little to distinguish this effort from the many other films about Southern racism and the civil rights movement. Rated PG-13. NM

BROOKLYN’S FINESTA thin blue film coats director Antoine Fuqua’s needed return to his hardboiled cop drama roots. And, like Fuqua’s Training Day, this is a testosterone-fueled, actor-driven policier that favors melodrama over originality. The narrative is a loosely connected triptych following the travails of three ethically challenged police officers: A burned-down flatfoot on the eve of retirement (Richard Gere); a drug-addled, financially strapped narc (Ethan Hawke); and an undercover cop (Don Cheadle) deep inside the drug network of a local kingpin (Wesley Snipes). The archetypes and clichés run as long as the Brooklyn Bridge, but Fuqua infuses them with incisive character development that transcends the superficial plot and rationed screen-time. While an emotionally distant Gere is miscast, Hawke has perfected the man-on-the-edge role. But, the film belongs to the tremendous yet still strangely underrated Cheadle, flashing the same streetwise verisimilitude and offbeat dialogue that previously informed his performances in Out of Sight and Devil in the Blue Dress. Rated R NM

COP OUTBruce “movie cop” Willis teams up with 30 Rock‘s Tracy Morgan for a buddy comedy about a stolen baseball card. Southwest Airlines spokesman Kevin Smith writes and directs. Rated R.

THE CRAZIESA town’s poisoned water supply quickly turns it from a quaint little village in which the town sheriff (Timothy Olyphant) and his wife (Radha Mitchell) can raise their unborn child into a reprise of the community that suffered through the Night of the Living Dead. As the sheriff and his wife try to escape the infectedand the military team that is determined to quarantine themthey discover that the town “crazies” aren’t exactly there because of a natural phenomenon. Director Breck Eisner (Sahara) follows horror conventions quite predictably, yet he cleverly manages to deliver shocks by adding a few ingenious cinematography twists. What’s more, the film raises a few chuckles as it mocks its own genre. The Crazies is like a familiar carnival ride, but one that is far more enjoyable than most. Rated R. BD

CRAZY HEARTThis story of a alcoholic country singer who turns his life around with the help of a young woman and her son recalls Tender Mercies, which gave Robert Duvall his only Academy Award. Playing middle-aged boozy crooner “Bad” Blake, Jeff Bridges is likely to turn this filmin which Duvall co-starsinto his own Oscar vehicle. Besides its derivative storyline, co-screenwriter Scott Cooper’s directorial debut suffers from a lack of chemistry between Bad and the much younger Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal, also Oscar-nominated for her performance). While Crazy Heart is the cinematic equivalent of a country-standard cover band, Bridges’ solo act is the showstopper. Rated R. NM

DEAR JOHNWhile visiting his father’s beach house in Charleston, S.C. while on leave from duty as an Army Ranger, John Tyree (Tatum) meets and falls for Savannah (Amanda Seyfried), a doe-eyed college student. Dear John goes AWOL as a love story for various reasons, including director Lasse Hallström’s ponderous direction, which distills John and Savannah’s coupling down to frolicking in the surf, making out in the rain and monotonous voiceovers of their overseas letters to each other. But, its saving grace is the complicated relationship between John and his father, played with great skill by Richard Jenkins. Rated PG-13. NM

THE LAST STATIONMichael Hoffman’s smart, well-acted, heavily researched tale of the last days of Leo Tolstoy is a meaty movie for a top-notch cast. Christopher Plummer plays the great man as a rasping, but burdened, old goat, while the finely aging Helen Mirren is glamorous as Sofya, his wife of 48 years. But all is not well: The novelist, so committed to his utopian ideals, has decided to relinquish his wealth and literary copyrights to the Russian people, and his wife is determined to stop it. Tolstoy’s ideas are ultimately downplayed in favor of a more digestible historical period piece that reduces the conflict to a sentimental one between Mirren’s Sofya and a mustache-twirling prig played by Paul Giamatti. Still, the film quite enjoyable, not least for the performances of Plummer and Mirren, who both received Oscar nominations. With Kerry Condon and James McAvoy. Rated R. DF

MY NAME IS KHANRizvan Khan (played by Shah Rukh Khan) is a Muslim living in San Francisco with Mandira (Kajol), his Hindu wife. Rizvan has Asperger’s Syndrome, and after a 9/11-provoked hate crime against his family, he takes Mandira’s angry demand literally that he should tell the United States president, “My name is Khan, and I am not a terrorist.” Shah Rukh is India’s biggest star, a secular Muslim married to a Hindu, and he and Kajol have been Hindi film’s favorite romantic couple, and here reunite after nearly a decade. Shah Rukh’s global celebrity stands strongly behind this film’s plea for tolerance. This is the new face of Bollywood crossover distributed by Fox Searchlight; a single plot without any lip-synched song and dance. My Name is Khan is well-crafted, and Shah Rukh and Kajol still make onscreen magic together, but if director Karan Johar, the modern master of the masala film, permanently deserts the form, that would be a cinematic shame. Rated PG-13. LB

PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANSRealizing in high school that your parents are weird is one thing, realizing you dad is Poseidon, mythic all-powerful God of the Sea, is quite another. Such is the fate of Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), who discovers his lineage along with a laundry list of other school age horrorshis best friend is actually a satyr, that teacher out to get him might literally swoop in with claws and take him down, etcafter getting caught up in an adventure beyond his wildest dreams. The whole Greek chorus of mystery and mischief starts out when Zeus’ lightning bolt is stolen and Percy is labeled prime suspect. Add to that the strange disappearance of Percy’s mom and the angry legion of battling gods that he and his friends get caught between and you’ve got yourself a Mount Olympus sized-quest, if only a molehill-sized display of emotional range and acting chops. It’s a labyrinthine plot populated by a flood of supporting characters and clever allusions that might reignite your love of mythology, if not necessarily blow your socks off. Rated PG. AM

SHERLOCK HOLMESWhile Guy Ritchie’s frenzied filmmaking style is strictly mod, his Holmesportrayed ably and energetically by Robert Downey Jr.is informed by Arthur Conan Doyle’s intellectually complex, personally flawed literary incarnation. You can almost smell the muck in Ritchie’s rendering of 19th-century London, although his editing and pacing are choppy in the best of times. And, when Holmes begins deciphering spells and maps to predict where the villain will strike next, the script takes an turn toward a Victorian-era version of The Da Vinci Code. Rated PG-13. NM

SHUTTER ISLANDFor everyone who will revel in Martin Scorsese’s ageless craftsmanship, others will recoil from a story that trawls mental illness, domestic violence and the Holocaust for cheap thrills. Adapted from a novel by Dennis Lehane, Shutter Island stars Leonardo DiCaprio, now firmly ensconced as the muse of Scorsese’s later career, as Teddy Daniels, a U.S. marshal sent with his partner Chuck (Mark Ruffalo) to the titular (and fictitious) island in Boston Harbor. The year is 1954 and their mission is to track down an escapee from Ashecliffe Asylum, a hospital for the criminally insane. Although DiCaprio gives his white-hot beleaguered best, the film proves a divisive affair: sometimes brilliant, sometimes maddening. Shutter Island is an old-fashioned potboiler that, for all its faults and self-importance, is unrelenting in its audacity and visual stimulation. Rated R. NM

UP IN THE AIRGeorge Clooney stars as Ryan Bingham, a smooth-talking veteran “career transition counselor,” a euphemism for being a hired gun paid to handle employee layoffs by corporate bosses too cowardly to do it themselves. Clooney’s retro leading-man charisma is perfect for this material, while the talented Anna Kendrick, playing his intense sidekick, would feel right at home in a screwball comedy. Vera Farmiga, as Ryan’s love interest and fellow traveler of the friendly skies, radiates the sophistication of classic noir divas. Clooney, Farmiga and Kendrick all received well-deserved Oscar nominations. Rated R. NM

VALENTINE’S DAYGarry Marshall’s latest outing concerns a bevy of Los Angelenos whose lives intersect throughout a day fraught with stressful expectations and romantic confusion. Florist Reed (Ashton Kutcher) proposes to girlfriend Morley (Jessica Alba). Reed’s best friend, schoolteacher Julia (Jennifer Garner), is falling head-over-heels for doctor Harrison (Patrick Dempsey), biding her time teaching her elementary school class until she can fly off to meet her lover. Straitlaced Jason (Topher Grace) dates Liz (Anne Hathaway) who moonlights as a phone sex worker,. Neurotic publicist Kara (Jessica Biel) obsesses over her Valentine’s party for singles while dealing aging quarterback Sean (Eric Dane). A little boy (Bryce Robinson) agonizes over delivering flowers to his chosen valentine in time, while his grandparents (Hector Elizondo and Shirley MacLaine) weather a rough patch in their 50-plus year marriage. Believe it or not, there’s more. Rated PG-13. Rated PG-13. SE

THE WHITE RIBBONLike Dogville or Our Town, Michael Haneke’s latest film is set in a remote village on the cusp of the modern era, and features two families at the center of the village’s life. But in this German town of Eichwald in the year 1913, the children are not treated kindly, and they do not treat other kindly. It is a malevolent place, a narrator tells us (the nearly omniscient narrator echoes the device used both in Lars von Trier’s film and Thornton Wilder’s play). Mysterious acts of violence are occurring in town, and no one seems to know who’s responsible and what the motives are. Haneke’s purpose isn’t to set up an elaborate M. Night Shyamalan-style contrivance that will be solved at the film’s end; however, his thematic aims may strike some as pat and unconvincing. It’s far better to avoid looking for easy conclusions after seeing this beautifully wrought yet unsettling film, which features the black and white cinematography of and an exceptional performance by an ensemble cast, particularly the children. Rated R. DF

THE WOLFMANThis umpteenth werewolf movie aims to revive the genre by harkening back to the original storyline to Lon Chaney Jr.’s classic incarnation in 1941. Not this time. Lawrence Talbot (Benicio Del Toro), a 19th-century American stage actor, returns to the English manse of his father (Anthony Hopkins) to track down his brother’s killer. For his troubles, Lawrence is bitten by and transforms into a Lycan every full moon (which seems to take place every other night). With its relentlessly insipid dialogue, the film could have worked as satire had it possessed any measure of self-awareness to merit such consideration. Judging by their gleeful turns, only Hopkins and Hugo Weavingas a Scotland Yard investigatorseem to grasp the inanity of it all. The film only succeeds once the CGI-fur starts to flythen it more than earns its R rating. Otherwise, this Wolfman is a rather neutered affair. Rated R. NM
