Opening This Week

CHLOEA poor man’s Poison Ivy , this is stock erotica gussied up with a top-shelf cast, name-brand director, soft-focus lighting and contemporary, often translucent set designs. Otherwise, it’s a Skinemax refugee whose art house aspirations cannot compensate for a hammy, surprisingly tepid script that is high on titillation but low on dramatic tension. When Catherine (Julianne Moore), a Toronto-based gynecologist, suspects her husband, David (Liam Neeson), of cheating, frustration leads her to enlist the services of a call girl, Chloe (Amanda Seyfried), to seduce him and report back her findings. This is a return of sorts for director Atom Egoyan to the voyeuristic, sex thriller roots of his breakout film, Exotica. Likewise, screenwriterand former Duke professorErin Cressida Wilson rehashes the prurience found in the more interesting script she wrote for Secretary. Ultimately, however, the story here is one that begins benignly before turning trashy and, finally, just plain silly. Rated R. Read our review. NM

HOT TUB TIME MACHINEFour friends take a time machine back to their ’80s-era prime. Rated R.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGONDreamworks animators tend to serve up satire with a sprinkle of sweetness (the Shrek franchise, Madagascar, Monsters vs. Aliens) but their latest, a film inspired by Cassandra Cowell’s eight-book Dragon series, is all sweetness with its heartwarming take on tolerance. Lilo and Stitch directors Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois enjoy bringing the childlike fantasy of taming ones own dragon to vivid 3D life. The plot revolves around the small Viking town of Berk, its inhabitants’ hatred of dragons and one young boy’s desire to find approval in the eyes of his father, a town hero for dragon-slaying. When the boy, called Hiccup, takes down a mysterious beast, he thinks his problems are over until he befriends the dragon and embarks on an entirely new adventure. One part of this film’s charm exists in its poetic storyline, which teaches life lessons of acceptance and embraces a “make love not war” philosophy. The other part exists in its brilliant 3D format that bristles and pops with pitch-perfect shadowing and movement. Rated PG. KJ

A PROPHETWith action occurring in three languages, not including the English subtitles, Jacques Audiard’s powerhouse prison epic has a string of intricate plotting that makes it seem like a two- or three-season story arc on HBO. But it’s a good kind of long, a Godfather kind of long. In a high-security prison in the northwest of France, Malik El Djebena (Tahar Rahim), a young French Arab, is beginning a sentence for, evidently, attacking a police officer. He’s unkempt, illiterate, friendlessand essentially harmless. How long can he last in jail? Before Malik can slip into the protection of the Arab prison population, he is summoned by the ruthless leader (Niels Arestrup) of the Corsican gang that rules the facility, who orders the young prisoner to kill a fellow inmate. The ensuing encounter changes him profoundly. This foreign-language Oscar nominee is a violent gangster drama, and one that’s hard to follow at times, but we’re left marveling at the distance Malik travels in the time it takes the film to dramatize several years of his life. ALICE IN WONDERLANDThere is a lot about Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland that’s curiouser and curiouser, but just not much “muchness.” It is a phantasmagorical fever dream that is both absorbing and banal. Burton has always embraced the sentiment behind Alice’s query, “What is the use of a book, without pictures or conversations?” There is wonder in the film’s unrelenting visual design, comic spark and intriguing voice work particularly impressive is the trippy cool of Rickman and Fry, while Christopher Lee is instantly recognizable as the Jabberwocky’s resonant baritone. But, it is a sense of awe not shared by the surprisingly aplomb Alice. Burton’s 3D pictorial of a young woman’s arrested development and reluctant embrace of adulthood belies the fact that Alice’s entire time underground is spent having one creature after another tell her where to go and what to do. The pleasingly zany spectacle of it all comes at the expense of the story’s soul. Rated PG. NM

AVATARThe hardest thing to stomach about Avatar is James Cameron’s delusion thatwith a few possible exceptionsthere is nothing to laugh about in this schmaltzy, wanna-be epic about an ex-marine who falls in love with a giant blue cartoon. Self-serious and chock full of New Age hokum, Avatar is trippier in the scenes that take place on the military base, where 3-D effects give the film an eerie ground-shifting feel, than it is in its fantasyland of the planet Pandora, where giant blue humanoids prance around in faux-hippie jewelry and make feline hissing sounds when they’re angry. Many Oscar nominations for this one. Rated PG-13. NG

BOUNTY HUNTERGerald Butler and Jennifer Aniston star as a bounty hunter and his latest quarry: his ex-wife. Rated PG-13.

BROOKLYN’S FINESTA thin blue film coats director Antoine Fuqua’s needed return to his hardboiled cop drama roots. And, like Fuqua’s Training Day, this is a testosterone-fueled, actor-driven policier that favors melodrama over originality. The narrative is a loosely connected triptych following the travails of three ethically challenged police officers: A burned-down flatfoot on the eve of retirement (Richard Gere); a drug-addled, financially strapped narc (Ethan Hawke); and an undercover cop (Don Cheadle) deep inside the drug network of a local kingpin (Wesley Snipes). The archetypes and clichés run as long as the Brooklyn Bridge, but Fuqua infuses them with incisive character development that transcends the superficial plot and rationed screen-time. While an emotionally distant Gere is miscast, Hawke has perfected the man-on-the-edge role. But, the film belongs to the tremendous yet still strangely underrated Cheadle, flashing the same streetwise verisimilitude and offbeat dialogue that previously informed his performances in Out of Sight and Devil in the Blue Dress. Rated R NM

COP OUTBruce “movie cop” Willis teams up with 30 Rock‘s Tracy Morgan for a buddy comedy about a stolen baseball card. Southwest Airlines spokesman Kevin Smith writes and directs. Rated R.

THE CRAZIESA town’s poisoned water supply quickly turns it from a quaint little village in which the town sheriff (Timothy Olyphant) and his wife (Radha Mitchell) can raise their unborn child into a reprise of the community that suffered through the Night of the Living Dead. As the sheriff and his wife try to escape the infectedand the military team that is determined to quarantine themthey discover that the town “crazies” aren’t exactly there because of a natural phenomenon. Director Breck Eisner (Sahara) follows horror conventions quite predictably, yet he cleverly manages to deliver shocks by adding a few ingenious cinematography twists. What’s more, the film raises a few chuckles as it mocks its own genre. The Crazies is like a familiar carnival ride, but one that is far more enjoyable than most. Rated R. BD

CRAZY HEARTThis story of a alcoholic country singer who turns his life around with the help of a young woman and her son recalls Tender Mercies, which gave Robert Duvall his only Academy Award. Playing middle-aged boozy crooner “Bad” Blake, Jeff Bridges is likely to turn this filmin which Duvall co-starsinto his own Oscar vehicle. Besides its derivative storyline, co-screenwriter Scott Cooper’s directorial debut suffers from a lack of chemistry between Bad and the much younger Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal, also Oscar-nominated for her performance). While Crazy Heart is the cinematic equivalent of a country-standard cover band, Bridges’ solo act is the showstopper. Rated R. NM

DIARY OF A WIMPY KIDThe title says it all. Rated PG.

GREEN ZONEAlthough a good movie can and should be made that investigates the political misinformation used to justify the war in Iraq, Paul Greengrass’ Green Zone, which was shot more than two years ago, feels like a dated political drama grounded in theatrics and buzzwords. If you want in-depth analysis of the film’s topicthe quixotic hunt for weapons of mass destructionthe best you will get is Matt Damon, as Army warrant officer Roy Miller, screaming variations on “Where are the WMDs!” or “Tell me about the WMDs!” The film’s in-your-face sense of urgency now seems strangely passéit may as well be about feverishly hunting for leprechauns or trying to uncover Iraq’s stockpiles of pixie dust. Rated R. NM

1 OUR FAMILY WEDDINGThis rebooted Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is a racist rom-com for a supposedly post-racial society. The premise sounds promising enough: A Latino family and an African-American family must get acquainted and overcome their cultural differences as their respective children Lucia (America Ferrera) and Marcus (Lance Gross) announce their plans to wed. But, a film that features a goat on Viagra? That has not one but two wedding-cake food fights? A film where a vase, if described as valuable, must be broken? Director Rick Famuyiwa hasn’t a clue how to shoot even a simple conversation and when in doubt, he reverts to dumbass slapstick that makes Abbott and Costello’s shtick look like Oscar Wilde. Plus, talk about fantasy! Only in the movies can one pull off an elaborate wedding in three weeks. Rated PG-13. LB

PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANSRealizing in high school that your parents are weird is one thing, realizing you dad is Poseidon, mythic all-powerful God of the Sea, is quite another. Such is the fate of Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), who discovers his lineage along with a laundry list of other school age horrorshis best friend is actually a satyr, that teacher out to get him might literally swoop in with claws and take him down, etcafter getting caught up in an adventure beyond his wildest dreams. The whole Greek chorus of mystery and mischief starts out when Zeus’ lightning bolt is stolen and Percy is labeled prime suspect. Add to that the strange disappearance of Percy’s mom and the angry legion of battling gods that he and his friends get caught between and you’ve got yourself a Mount Olympus sized-quest, if only a molehill-sized display of emotional range and acting chops. It’s a labyrinthine plot populated by a flood of supporting characters and clever allusions that might reignite your love of mythology, if not necessarily blow your socks off. Rated PG. AM

REMEMBER MEVampire heartthrob Robert Pattinson reaches for, and misses, the mantle of James Dean. In pre-9/11 New York, Tyler is a wayward 20-something who spurns his family’s money because he blames his father for his uncle’s suicide. Enter delicate and damaged college student Alyssa (Emilie de Ravin), who struggles with her baggage while falling in love with Tyler. The plot has its compelling moments, but Pattinson, who has little more to offer than nice hair and brooding sultriness, makes every scene seem painfully awkward and contrived. Rated PG-13. BD

REPO MENYou might want to watch the closing credits of this humdrum futuristic action-comedy-thriller-bloody revenge spectacle to check whether Michael Moore is listed as a co-producer. In this not-so-distant dystopia, a shadowy conglomerate named The Union has cornered the market on manufacturing and selling synthetic replacement human organs. The catch: Their price can reach the high six figures and the interest rate soars north of 20 percent. Oh, and if you default on your payments, the title characterscalled landlords in the filmhave the authority to repossess the organs, even if it means killing you. That’s the predicament facing one adept repo man, Remy (Jude Law), after an on-the-job electrocution gives him both an artificial heart he cannot afford and a crisis of conscience over his vocation. It’s the perils of hyper-privatized medicine combined with the evils of predatory lendingget it? Beyond the dime-store agitprop, director Miguel Sapochnik never finds a correct or consistent tone. The end result is at best slapdash and silly, at worst ugly and unpleasant. Rated R. NM

SHE’S OUT OF MY LEAGUECan a smokin’ hot 10 ever be with a mediocre five? That’s the question the puny Pittsburgh protagonist of She’s Out Of My League sets out to answer. After meeting babe Molly (Alice Eve) at the airport security checkpoint, TSA agent and super-geek Kirk (Jay Baruchel) can’t believe his good fortune when he finds out that she might actually be into him. Fueled by his friends’ insistence that there’s no way a girl that hot could ever go for a “moodle” (man poodle) like him, he begins to sabotage the best thing that’s ever happened to him. Out of My League is reminiscent in the best ways of other recent good-hearted gross-out comedies like The 40-Year Old Virgin, and Baruchel manages to be likeable, charming and uncool at the same time. Rated R. BD

SHUTTER ISLANDFor everyone who will revel in Martin Scorsese’s ageless craftsmanship, others will recoil from a story that trawls mental illness, domestic violence and the Holocaust for cheap thrills. Adapted from a novel by Dennis Lehane, Shutter Island stars Leonardo DiCaprio, now firmly ensconced as the muse of Scorsese’s later career, as Teddy Daniels, a U.S. marshal sent with his partner Chuck (Mark Ruffalo) to the titular (and fictitious) island in Boston Harbor. The year is 1954 and their mission is to track down an escapee from Ashecliffe Asylum, a hospital for the criminally insane. Although DiCaprio gives his white-hot beleaguered best, the film proves a divisive affair: sometimes brilliant, sometimes maddening. Shutter Island is an old-fashioned potboiler that, for all its faults and self-importance, is unrelenting in its audacity and visual stimulation. Rated R. NM

SWEETGRASSNever mind Brokeback Mountain: You are not likely to see a better film about herding sheep in Montana than this out-of-left-field documentary stunner from Ilisa Barbash and Lucien Castaing-Taylor. Filmed over the course of three years in the early 2000s, Sweetgrass takes us on a year-long journey of sheep and the men, women and dogs who raise them. The film is composed of long, meditative takes, with no narration or direct address to the camera. Instead, we see timeless rituals: the calving ewes, the frantic efforts to save sick animals (including tricking mothers into adopting orphaned lambs), the shearing (which seems like a violation) and then, most spectacularly, the summer-long overland trek to the sweetgrass of the higher elevations. Among the delights are the remarkably coarse cowboys (one gloriously profane aria accompanies a majestic shot of hundreds of sheep swarming up a mountainside); among the terrors are the bears and wolves that are drawn to this woolly buffet table moving through their midst. Hurry up and see this: The drives documented by this film were the last ones conducted in this country. Not rated. DF
