Warehouse Artist Studios Grande Open
There was a time, not long ago, when it seemed like the Golden Belt mixed-use development might grow into a Durham arts-and-entertainment magnet to rival downtown or the area around Motorco. But that prospect dimmed with the gradual evacuation of the artist studios in the historic textile-and-tobacco plant, not to mention the closure of jazz club The Shed and art gallery SPECTRE Arts, which left The Carrack virtually alone to hold it down. Now, LRC Properties, which bought the complex from Scientific Properties, holds out fresh hope for the arts at Golden Belt by opening twenty-five new studios occupied by local artists as well as a Durham Art Guild satellite gallery. This free, family-friendly grand opening features opportunities to meet the artists, food trucks, and live music, and campus newcomer Hi-Wire Brewing will have local beers on tap as well as table games like foosball and some carnival attractions. —Brian Howe
