Habibi frontwoman Rahill Jamalifard’s parents immigrated from Iran near the end of the 1970s, shortly before the Iranian Revolution, bringing with them a household devotion to both Middle Eastern psychedelic music and traditional Iranian music. Habibi, which means “my love” in Farsi, debuted as a quintet in Brooklyn in 2013 with a self-titled EP that drew together fuzzy guitar riffs, Motown vibes, and plush surf punk. Last year’s follow-up, Cardamom Garden, develops their style of garage rock tempered by some band members’ roots in Detroit and textured with girl group harmonies. This week, the band’s residency in Duke Performances Building Bridges: Muslims in America series is capped with a show at The Pinhook.
