This Monday, the people most deeply affected by the Wake County Sheriff office will share their stories. On November 6, Wake County voters will have a choice in an election for the county’s highest law enforcement officer. Sheriffs are elected to four year terms manage county law enforcement, security in the jail and courtrooms, daily conditions of county jails and inmates in county custody, and elect to what extent to collaborate with federal immigration enforcement. Donnie Harrison, the incumbent, has implemented the 287(g) program, which allows deputies to work with the Trump Administration's federal immigration authorities. His opponent, Gerald Baker, says he will end the program, and promises more civilian involvement in the department.
On Monday, October 29, at 7 pm, Wake community members will tell their stories about interactions with the Wake County Sheriff's Office, including the effect of the 287(g) program. To learn more about the Wake County Sheriff's Office and the decisions facing Wake voters, visit wakefamiliestogether.com. The event will be free and open to the public, and take place at Umstead Park UCC, at 8208 Brownleigh Drive in Raleigh. We will provide interpretation for English and Spanish speakers. This will be a nonpartisan event, not affiliated with or directly supporting any candidate for sheriff.
