Known by some simply as FGL, this pop-country duo broke through with 2012 single, “Cruise,” which occupied the top spot on U.S. country charts for twenty-four weeks and became the best-selling country song of the digital era. And it wasn’t a fluke: A dozen more of FGL’s songs became wildly popular, too, making tank-top-rocking millionaires out of Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, and also positioning them as something like the Nickelback of country music. Now they’ve been singing about jean shorts, lifted trucks, and girls in jeans shorts in lifted trucks long enough for fans to lament the passing of the band’s “golden era.” But don’t worry, they’re still rolling strong in their Chevy. Despite the backlash against so-called “bro-country”—a genre FGL helped launch with “Cruise”—the duo is still popular enough to pack arenas and amphitheatres across the country. Just like, you know, Nickelback.
