Perk + Niel, an independent curatorial consultancy that advocates for artists of color in the Triangle area, is quickly becoming an exciting node on the Third Friday circuit. In its new Art & Architecture series, for example, it recently hosted an installation by Calvin Brett, who creates topographies of trash, and a run of varied performances around it, activating the lobby and other spaces in the N.C. Mutual building where it resides. Now, Perk + Niel is heading off-campus to Golden Belt Studios for a special pop-up exhibit on Saturday evening. Where This Flower Blooms is a celebration of Black art featuring work by Maya Avery, Valencia Abraham, Kiara Sanders, Shaquim Muldrow, Britney Balmer, Jameela F. Dallis, Will Jenkins, Leah Miracle Young, Miriam Ximil, and Shamonique Miles. The exhibit is oriented toward breaking down stigma around mental health, and the featured speaker is Anastasia Williams, founder of A Will to Thrive Counseling.
