PRESS RELEASE:
The Conjure and Be Connected Present HERstory: A Black Femme Hip Hop Lineup
2019 has proved to be a powerful year for women in hip hop. Rapsody’s latest release EVE has received critical acclaim, shining a light on what anyone from North Carolina has known for years: NC is brimming with hip hop talent, and gender is not a barometer for the quality of a rapper’s talent. The celebration continues with HERstory, a showcase and of North Carolina’s local, female hip hop talent presented by The Conjure.
Lead by Gemynii, The Conjure has established itself as one of the hottest parties in Durham. Though Gemynii has been primarily known as a visual artist, over the years she has developed a following as a DJ. She has played music festivals such as Moogfest and opened for major artists such as Miguel. One of her goals as a DJ has been to place a spotlight on black, femme, and queer talent, a segment of hip hop that is often ignored, let alone respected. HERstory takes that goal from the turntables to the stage, featuring some of the best underground female talent that the Triangle has to offer. Artists Tanajah, M8alla, Lena Jackson, Maestra and Lovely the Don will light up the stage. The evening will also see the reintroduction of Zen, formally ZenSoFly. Durham’s own Angel Dozier, head of Be Connected, and partnering collaborator of the event will emcee, with a cypher and afterparty with DJ Gemynii. On November 22nd, HER story will be told and it’s one you don’t want to miss.
