Indigo Girls
Durham Performing Arts Center 123 Vivian St, Durham, North Carolina 27701
Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have been performing as the Indigo Girls since 1985, and they’ve been an indelible part of pop culture since, reliably putting out heartfelt, skillful songs about finding oneself while navigating complicated relationships. Even if you’re not a dedicated fan, you’re probably familiar with their sound. The duo’s earnest but snappy folk-rock harmonizing was distinctive at their height in the 1990s, and if you’ve spent any time in a coffee shop in the intervening decades, you’ve heard their numerous copycats. That said, Ray and Saliers still have something that’s all their own: an emotionality and enthusiasm that hasn’t been dampened by years of recording and touring. Listening to recordings of recent performances, you get the sense that they still feel all their songs—and that audiences do, too. With H.C. McEntire.
