PRESS RELEASE:
Taking a break from the New York art scene, Durham-native artist Joe McDonough presents a unique retrospective at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro this month. Juxtaposing art made as a young child in the early 1980s with work made as an adult over the past fifteen years, McDonough asserts that child art can function as important and legitimate contemporary art. Alternating childhood pieces with aesthetically-corresponding abstract work, the artist questions fundamental notions of artistic motivation, value, and skill. McDonough holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and will be showing found-object-based work with Greensboro artist Patricia Cooke during February at Durham's Scrap Exchange gallery. "My Kid Could Paint That" will run at The ArtsCenter through January 31st, and can be viewed Monday through Friday, 12:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
