Led by local hooksmiths Wylie Hunter and Nick Jaeger, Wild Fur has a chameleonic tendency to shift between and blur genres, landing in synthy, soulful pop-rock territory with textures layered on via samples, sparse percussion,and distorted guitar. Imagine a meeting between The Smiths and Roy Orbison in 2018, and you’re in the neighborhood, at least for a song or two. Athens’ Easter Island adds glimmering,dreamy pop that veers into post-rock, while Wilmington’s The Male Men spikes power pop with surf guitars and punk tempos. —Spencer Griffith.
