Margie Gillis
Canadian modern dancer and choreographer Margie Gillis has created and performed more than one hundred solos over the course of an expansive career, one which took her to China in 1979, making her the first Western artist to introduce modern dance in the wake of the cultural revolution. Now, she comes to Durham for a weeklong residency at Duke University’s dance program. The week includes several public events, including “Dancing from the Inside Out,” a lecture on February 22 which will feature four selections from Gillis, who will also take questions from the audience. Gillis has a signature mane of hair that flows free while she dances; her holistic, visionary approach to dance has earned her the moniker “philosophess.” Gillis will also give an advanced modern dance class on February 26 and a lunch lecture on February 27; both events are open to the public, but registration is required. —Sarah Edwards
