21c Museum Hotel 111 N. Corcoran St., Durham, North Carolina
21c Museum Hotel unveils a packed contemporary portraiture exhibition featuring work by forty contemporary artists, many of whom pay striking homage to classical portraiture in recasting their own images and experiences. Featured artist Anthony Goicolea, a photographer long interested in digital manipulation and themes of duality and the reclamation of self, nods to John Singer Sargent's "Madame X" with "Portrait in Negative of a Boy with Harmonica as Madame Gautreau." Miguel Ángel Rojas's series depicting a young, injured Colombian soldier in repose gracefully gestures toward Michelangelo's "David." Curated by Alice Gray Stites, the exhibition also includes works by Titus Kaphar, Ori Gersht, and Zanele Muholi. This cocktail reception with Goicolea kicks off the exhibition, which runs through March. —Sarah Edwards
