The Possessed (La Donna Del Lago)

In this stylish 1965 film, a visitor descends on a small Italian village in search of a woman, only to be told that she is dead. Directed by Luigi Bazzoni and based on the novel La donna del lago by Giovanni Comisso, the film is one of the inspirations behind the artist Leanne Shapton’s exhibit, La donna del lago, which runs at Lump Gallery through January 24. Shapton—an award-winning writer and illustrator who has had work in The Paris Review and The New York Times, among other places—charmingly translates the experience of movie-watching to the canvas with a series of soft, noir-ish odes to cinema. At this screening—in 2K restoration from the original 35mm—the mood is mysterious, and the popcorn flows free. —Sarah Edwards
