Singles and Doubles
Durham Cinematheque 305 E Chapel Hill St, Durham, North Carolina 27701
Tom Whiteside has always had a taste for films off the beaten path: For almost three decades, now, the UNC-Chapel Hill grad has been mining archives in order to curate his experimental film program, Durham Cinematheque. This week, Whiteside’s “Singles and Doubles” program showcases single-shot films from the nineteenth and twentieth century, including turn-of-the-century films by pioneers like the Lumière brothers, who revolutionized filmmaking with the invention of the cinematograph. There are only ten seats, so make sure to RSVP on the event Facebook page if you want to snag one—although the program notes do make sure to state that there will be air conditioning during the screening (vintage nineteenth-century material is good, but twenty-first-century A/C is even better). At the same location, Whiteside’s Analog Museum currently boasts Bruguiere 3D images on glass which will “give you a glimpse into how “rich folks lived in France in the early 1800s.”
