While most people aren’t particularly lacking for media saturation—sounds and stories seem piped into our consciousness from every angle—there’s something about lying silently outside on the grass, surrounded by other people lying silently on the grass, that feels antithetical to the ravages of the attention economy. Launched in 2014, Audio Under the Stars is an immersive invitation to socialize, drink wine, smell sweet clover, and quietly experience the power of listening. In this second installment of a three-part summer series, locally-produced or focused audio segments will converge around themes of the supernatural: tales of “weird science, dramatic breakthroughs, the power of belief, and the allure of the unknown.” As for the knowns, the CDS event page advises that the event is BYOB, that Dang Good Dogs will be on hand to sell both veggie and hot dogs, and that, invariably, the event will be interrupted by the pleasant refrain of a passing train whistle or two.
