It’s here: the most important and widely appealing museum exhibit of the fall season. Art historians know Georgia O’Keeffe as a titan of twentieth-century painting and a pioneer of American modernism. The larger public knows her as the visionary behind instantly recognizable images of oversize blossoms, colorful desert dreams, and nocturnal New York skyscrapers, their realism trembling on the edge of abstraction. O’Keeffe’s way of seeing is irreducible to kitsch despite the best efforts of manufacturers of postcards, wall calendars, and coffee-table tomes; her images retain the power to move and awe. In this major exhibit, some of her most significant paintings and sculptures are placed in dialogue with contemporary artists who followed her. The show is ticketed with Candida Höfer in Mexico, which features twenty-five large-scale photographic interiors of grand libraries, convents, theaters, churches, and museums in Mexico.
