Transcending Otherness Postcards
The idea of “normal” is—well, it’s very strange. What is normal in a world of endless forms, endless diversity, endless different preferences and perspectives? And how can anyone truly be free when the very concept of “normal,” a baseline to follow or flaunt, exists? Such questions lie at the heart of Transcending Otherness, a group exhibit at Meredith College that probes social issues relating to class, education, gender, mental health, race, and more, all by sounding voices that are central to the American experience even as mainstream culture might try to marginalize them. The five artists included in the exhibit are textile artist Jennifer Markowitz, conceptual artist Stacey L. Kirby, painters Libby O’Daniel and Lamar Whidbee, and photographer Jade Wilson. N.C. poet laureate Jaki Shelton Green responds to the work in verse. Meet the artists at this reception and gallery talk. —Brian Howe
