Pittsboro has a new neighborhood bar. The City Tap (545-0562, www.thecitytap.com) just opened at 89 Hillsboro St. (at the corner of U.S. 15-501 and Salisbury Street) downtown. Owners Steve Carr, Sarah Carr and Steve Cote aim to “combine comfort with stimulating food, drink, art and sound.” The City Tap offers 10 draft beers and 20 more by the bottle, wine by the glass and bottle, and soft drinks. Its menu includes “simple items prepared with choice ingredients,” including bread from Durham’s Guglhupf Bakery. City Tap’s hours are 4-11 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 4 p.m.-midnight Friday and Saturday.

Bravo to Raleigh-based coffee company Larry’s Beans (1507 Gavin St., 828-1234, www.larrysbeans.com) for its latest move on behalf of the planet. Larry’s, which is already shade-grown, organic and fair-trade certified, just introduced a completely biodegradable stand-up bag for its coffee. According to Larry’s, the new 12-ounce and 1-pound coffee bags use “state-of-the-art technology that allows plastic to biodegrade in landfill and even your home compost heap. It’s a pretty new technology, invented here in the U.S., and we believe we are one of the first companies to be using it.”

Now here’s some of the best news I’ve heard in a long time: A mobile cupcakery is coming to downtown Durham. A mobile cupcakery is exactly what it sounds like: a cupcake bakery on wheelsspecifically, a vintage Airstream trailer. Daisy Cakes (389-4307, info@daisycakes.com) serves breakfast pastries, coffee, drinks and cupcakes while parked at the intersection of Foster and Geer Streets downtown (near the Durham Farmers’ Market). Head cakegirl Tanya Catolos is currently the pastry chef at the Washington Duke Inn and was previously at The Carolina Inn and Nana’s Chophouse.
