I write in praise and gratitude for Hal Crowther's recent article "Sympathy for the Devils?" In a time when arguments for character are either patently gendered or suffused with the rhetoric of religious fanatics, your article recaptured and reframed college as a coming-of-age opportunity where character is central, not adjunct. I have asked my 16-year-old son to read the article carefully before ending his summer with AP coursework and SAT preparation activities. First things first.
