Gutarist, rocker, teacher and new music composer marc faris premieres An Alternative Community, a new work that explores (as he puts it) “creating productive musical relationships between performers with different sociomusical backgrounds” and offering faris’ take on political debates over this state’s past, present and future. In addition to music, the piece incorporates texts by poet Charles Jester and video projections by artist Bill Noland. Also on the bill are compositions by Amelia Burch, Crowmeat Bob and Todd Hershberger & Thom Limbert.

The community comes together on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. at the John T. Frederick Auditorium at the N.C. School of Science and Math in Durham. Tickets are $8 or $6 for students. The event is free for NCSSM students.
