Spooky PlacesThe “Homegrown Halloween in Chapel Hill” campaign is discouraging out-of-towners from joining the Franklin Street partywhich ends at midnight anywayso if you don’t live in downtown Chapel Hill or on the UNC campus, good luck getting there. Plenty of Halloween musical festivities should keep you busy and offer better parking: In Raleigh, Left Outlet will perform for the Rocky Horror Halloween party Thursday night at Tir Na Nog at 10 p.m. On Friday, Deep South Bar will host band M3 and have a rock ‘n’ roll costume contest. In Carrboro, Reservoir Bar will have the Rockin’ Ammonia Karaoke’s Halloween Bash Thursday, which will be filmed for an independent documentary. If you’re willing to work around the overflow traffic that street closings in Chapel Hill are sure to conjure, Danzig cover band Fanzig will play at Reservoir Bar Friday night. Rat Jackson plays an entire set of classic rock covers at Jack Sprat; Pink Flag is also on the bill. On Thursday and Friday, family-friendly live bluegrass music, a pumpkin walk and a hay bale maze cost you nothing at Fearrington Village in Pittsboro. In Durham, Broad Street Café will showcase Celtic Halloween music, Jon Shain and Sea Cow on Saturday for free. Or try the Hallow-Eno celebration at West Point on the Eno at 6 p.m on Friday. The theatricallyand barber-ishlyinclined can attend a special costume night performance of Sweeney Todd on the Duke campus, courtesy of Hoof ‘n’ Horns. If you want to hunt ghosts in Hillsborough, join one of four tours through the city, starting every 30 minutes beginning at 7 p.m. (historichillsborough.org). The Harder They Fall
N.C. Museum of ArtIf you’re not in the mood for anything oriented toward kids and candy (what’s wrong with you?), tonight’s offering at NCMA’s fall film noir series is a curious and worthy one. This boxing drama was scripted by Budd Schulberg, best known for the novel What Makes Sammy Run? and the script for On the Waterfront. Schulberg courted controversy with his story, for the events bore an uncanny resemblance to the boxing scene of the mid-1930s with a very thinly disguised depiction of mobbed-up heavyweight Primo Carnera at its center. The film also features Max Baer, who was portrayed erroneously as a sneering baddie in the Russell Crowe film Cinderella Man, as a fictitious version of himself. But, for Humphrey Bogart fans everywhere, The Harder They Fall is the last screen appearance for the icon, who looks visibly illto good effect, frankly. In his checkout role, he plays a washed-up journalist who seizes one last chance. (No, it doesn’t remind us of anyone we know.) The film begins at 8 p.m. and N.C.
