Burning Coal Theatre, Meymandi Theatre at Murphey School AuditoriumBritish playwright Terry Johnson specializes in what might be called counterfactual pop culture fantasies. His best known work in this country is Insignificance, a play that speculated upon a meeting of those two indelible icons of the 1950s, Marilyn Monroe and Sen. Joseph McCarthy. More recently, there was the playful 2003 London hit Hitchcock Blonde. Now, Burning Coal Theatre is making a foray into Johnson’s farcical world with the North Carolina premiere of Hysteria, a play that imagines a meeting of Sigmund Freud, father of the unconscious, and Salvador Dalí, his most notorious artistic spawn.
