Speech & Debate
Elizabeth Price Kenan Theatre, UNC CampusUNC’s LAB! Theater puts up a long-weekend run of Speech & Debate, a satirical teen sex tale by Stephen Karam. Directed by Andrew Slater, the play concerns a trio of teens who become embroiled in a sex scandal that takes over an entire town. Speech & Debate recieved excellent notices in its off-Broadway run in 2006, with The New York Times’ Caryn James raving, “The play’s real accomplishment is its picture of the borderland between late adolescence and adulthood, where grown-up ideas and ambition coexist with childish will and bravado.” Karam’s work has been elsewhere in the Triangle, notably with Raleigh Ensemble Players’ 2007 production of columbinus. A gala reception follows tonight’s performance; the free show continues through Tuesday. Visit www.labtheatre.blogspot.com.Sarah Ewald
