Retrofantasma
Carolina Theatre–It’s difficult to pinpoint the flameout of the ambitious young directors of 1970s New Hollywood. Was it Coppola’s bloated tribute to the MGM musical, One from the Heart? Or William Friedkin’s remake of Wages of Fear, called Sorcerer? Or maybe it was when Paul Schrader made Cat People, a remake of Jacques Tourneur’s 1942 original, itself adapted from a story by DeWitt Bodeen. Starring Nastassja Kinski and made on a cocaine-filled set, the film was a bomb upon its 1982 release but has found later admirers, including the folks at Retrofantasma.
