Paraphrasing Ogden Nash, now we reach the grand musical finale of the holidays, and some of the offerings include non-traditional fare. For example, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 15 and Saturday, Dec. 16 in UNC’s Hill Hall, the Chapel Hill Community Chorus presents Cantatas 5 and 6, the last installment of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. The singers have been working through the songs for several years. Sue Klausmeyer conducts, and the soloists include Jeanne Fischer, soprano; Jonas Laughlin, countertenor; Timothy Sparks, tenor; and Krassen Karagiozov, baritone. The program also includes music by Mendelssohn, Pinkham, Ferko, Paulus and Bassi. Admission is $15 and $6 for students.
On Saturday at 3 and 8 p.m. and on Sunday at 3 p.m., the Raleigh Ringers, one of America’s leading handbell ensembles, offer their annual holiday spectacular in Raleigh’s Meymandi Concert Hall. David Harris directs. Tickets are $14 in advance and $12 for seniors and students.
Otherwise, check out the exceptional sonority of the Raleigh Flute Choir at the N.C. Museum of Art on Sunday at 3 p.m. Ann Cameron Pearce directs, and admission to this holiday program is only $10 and $4 for students.
At 7:30 p.m. on that same evening, the Chancel Choir of Raleigh’s Edenton Street United Methodist Church sings Ron Nelson’s The Christmas Story, based on the Gospels of Luke and Matthew. William J. Weisser, celebrating his 30th anniversary at the church, conducts the free concert.
The Triangle’s two outstanding boys choirs bring the holiday music season to a close. William J. Graham conducts the N.C. Boys Choir in Duke Chapel at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 18. Tickets are $12 and $8 for children 12 and under. And, on Tuesday at 7: 30 p.m. in Edenton Street United Methodist Church, Thomas E. Sibley directs the Raleigh Boychoir in “Carols of Christmas.” This costs $15, $13 for seniors and $10 for students. Tickets must be purchased in advance from the choir (881-9259) or at Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh.
