Here’s what The Indy was writing about the week of Oct. 22:

5 years ago: Phil Ruth explored the facts behind Matthew Shepard’s death and the confusion of the local gay community. Shepard, who was beaten to death in Laramie, Wyo., lived in Raleigh for almost a year and had many ties to the Triangle.

10 years ago: Gillian Floren reported on survivors of sexual assault, detailing the difficulties and struggles of rape victims recovering from the physical and emotional abuse, and dispelling such myths as, “It can’t happen to men.”

20 years ago: Gary Dorsey investigated Lt. Gov. Jimmy Green’s heated squabbles with the press. Green, who was indicted on bribery charges that summer, accused the state’s journalists of slander and bias.
