Walnut CreekRemember The Lone Rangers, the radio-invading power trio of Buscemi, Sandler and Fraser whose only goal was to get its terrible little single onto the massive waves of a Los Angeles radio station? Just less than 20 years ago, that was No Doubt, a hard-luck, service-industry outfit of ska-, glam- and metal-loving college kids whose 1992 debut was ignored by powerful SoCal syndicate KROQ. A major-label deal begot persistence, though, and five years later, No Doubtsurvivors of suicide, breakup, intra-act romance and lost membersreleased the aggressive if polished Tragic Kingdom, which subsequently sold 12 million stateside copies. Superstardom followed for No Doubt, but the band took a break in 2004 to raise families, allowing Gwen Stefani to build a solo empire. For this round, the band returns on separate tour buses, with new kids, old hits and a traveling recording studio in tow. There’s talk of a fresh album, but tonight belongs to a little group from the O.C. that struggled its way from serving as the second act on 14-band California ska bills to throwing one of the biggest tours of the summer. Paramore, of Tennesseea band of similarly humble origins fronted by another heir apparent to frontwoman stardom, the vivacious Hayley Williamsopens. Tickets for 7:30 p.m. show run $10-$80.
