AFTER HANNIBAL DISCUSSION
BARNES & NOBLEIn tonight’s iteration of the New Hope Commons outlet’s recurring Contemporary Fiction discussion group, the subject is After Hannibal, a 1996 novel by English author Barry Unsworth. The writer is a three-time Booker Prize short-lister, and he shared the prize in 1992 for his novel Sacred Hunger (and perhaps became the answer to a trivia questionhis fellow honoree that year was Michael Ondaatje, for The English Patient). Another of Unsworth’s books, Pascali’s Island, was adapted into a 1988 film starring Ben Kingsley and Helen Mirren. The novel under discussion tonight, After Hannibal, also has an obvious movie association but instead is a tale of expat couples in the Italian region of Umbria, the land that in antiquity was the site of the annihilation of Roman legions by Hannibal, the Carthaginian invader. The discussion begins at 7 p.m. For more info, call 489-3012 or visit tinyurl.com/2ttkgm. David Fellerath
