LOCAL 506–Thanksgiving is still six months away, but here’s some pre-emptive gratitude for Merge Records, whose Chapel Hill/Durham epicenter almost insures that, when their bands go on tour, the Triangle gets a stop. Glasgow, Scotland’s sextet Camera Obscura won’t release its second album of new material on Merge until June, but they will be premiering songs from Let’s Get Out of This Country on a four-show American jaunt–South by Southwest, Chapel Hill then New York. The record pushes the band far beyond the grade-school image associated with their previous twee-related releases, injecting a bit of lush Phil Spector layering and hearty Memphis soul. It’s their best album yet, and we can sample it three months early at 9:30 p.m. for $10. –Grayson Currin

QUAIL RIDGE BOOKS & MUSIC–When Betsy Taylor, environmental, economic and social activist, refused to raise her two children as just more members of the
I-want generation, she started the Center for the New American Dream, a nonprofit with the goal of teaching families how to live away from the possessive. Her book, What Kids Really Want That Money Can’t Buy, continues down that path, offering parenting advice from the practical–re-instating family dinners –to the advanced–teaching kids how to balance their own budget. A Yale master’s graduate and a Duke alumna, Taylor has testified before the UN and spent a dozen years leading philanthropic efforts. She reads from the book at 7 p.m.
