Jaume Plensa is the Spanish artist whose proposed public installation, “City Square,” was the object of so much controversy in Raleigh. While some of the city’s better tastemakers quietly dismissed the design as uninspired, bureaucratic caution and political infighting doomed the project.
While the citizens of Raleigh battled over Plensa, the Nasher Museum at Duke University cultivated a relationship with the artist. This Sunday, Oct. 29, he will be in Durham to give a free lecture, “Human Nature,” at 3 p.m. at the Nasher Museum.
Furthermore, a 9-foot-tall glowing sculpture by the artist will be installed on Duke’s new West Campus Plaza on Friday, Oct. 27. The sculpture, made from polyester resin and stainless steel, is called “Tattoo” and will be on display through May 2007.
