Help raise funds to eradicate breast cancer simply by strapping on your tennis shoes and going for a walk–or run, if you’re a show-off (some of us have bad knees, OK?).
The Race for the Cure is held every year by the Susan G. Komen Foundation–a group founded by Nancy Brinker after her sister, Komen, died of breast cancer at age 36–on what generally turns out to be one of the most beautiful days in the Triangle. The race is 5K–about 3.1 miles–and you can compete with others to see who’s speediest, or walk in support of others. Many friends and family of breast cancer patients, as well as survivors, participate in the race; it’s a real heart-tugging wake-up call to watch the number of participants with “in support of” or “in memory of” signs, and also a real celebration to see how many survivors have come out swinging on the other side. What a rich way to spend a beautiful Saturday morning–although don’t forget the carb-up pasta party on Friday night.
The race begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at Raleigh’s Meredith College, with registration beginning as early as 6:30 a.m. The open (non-competitive) co-ed walk begins at 9:15 a.m. Visit
