Triangle women can help cancer victims while helping themselves, by participating in a free 12-week exercise program sponsored by the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. The program will begin March 14 with warm-up exercises and walking. By the end of the program, women will be running three miles at a stretch to prepare for the Komen N.C. Triangle Race for the Cure, in June. Last year, about 12,200 runners joined the race, raising more than $465,000 for breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs in the Triangle. Throughout the course of the UNC program, local female runners will be joining the participants as “guest runners” to provide encouragement and advice. When group coordinator and nurse practitioner Judy Swasey led this type of program in New York, participants improved not only their diets and weight levels, but their stress and self-esteem levels as well.
