Long Leaf Opera Vocal Competition

Representing eight different states, including North Carolina, the finalists perform three English language selections in front of judges and a live audience, competing to win cash prizes ranging from $250 to $1000. Angela Shelton
UNC School of Social WorkPerhaps known best as co-screenwriter for 1999’s Tumbleweeds (which was based off of her childhood memories) actor, comedian and writer Angela Shelton visits UNC today to present and discuss her award-winning film Searching for Angela Shelton. At age 27, Shelton traveled across America, seeking to document the lives of women who share her name. Her documentary chronicles her quest and the surprise that 70 percent of women she encountered were victims of rape, sexual assault and/ or domestic violence. Daily Tar Heel’s Diversions
Local 506Two years ago, The Daily Tar Heel launched its Diversions blog (apps.dailytarheel.com/blogs/dive), devoting significant resources to local music via show reviews, live photos, album reviews, interviews and short essays ever since. The blog expanded its reach to culture-at-large this year, but the focus clearly remains on documenting the wealth of talent either visiting or living in the university’s front yard. Tonight, the blog celebrates the close of year two with three excellent locals: Hammer No More the Fingers (searing indie rock new-heroes from Durham), The Future Kings of Nowhere (emo-ish acoustic anthems, potent and pummeling, also from Durham) and The Graves of Fairmont (Mac McCaughan and Mark Kozelek, high-fiving in springtime).
