DowntownDurham’s venerable weekend-long celebration of its working artists gets under way at 10 a.m., continuing through 6 p.m., before running noon-6 p.m. Sunday. More than 100 juried visual artists from eight states will be present, and live performers will entertain on three stages. Among those scheduled to appear are Adam Sampieri, Midtown Dickens, Little River Cloggers, Chinese Kung Fu Center and Bouncing Bulldogs. Regulator BookshopGirls Rock N.C. has inspired dozens of Triangle gals to pick up their guitar (or plunk down at a drum kit, keyboard or in front of a mic) and belt out a tune or two. Now here’s a chance to get expressive in a new way as the group sponsors a creative workshop where girls of all ages can participate in poetry or lyric writing, make a ‘zine and collaborate on collages with like-minded female friends in an art-friendly environment. The event capitalizes on the new prize jewel of the organization, their first book, Rock ‘N’ Roll Camp for Girls, from Chronicle Publishers. The book offers girls who have yet to experience the summertime rock camp a DIY experience where they can learn the basics of song writing, recording an album, starting a band and rockin’ out. Tonight, members of Girls Rock N.C. will tell all about their experiences at camp and sign copies of their book. No cost to get in the door, but get there a few minutes before the 7 p.m. start to sign up for the workshop. Kathy Justice

Iron Chef Competition
North HillsInterfaith Food Shuttle has a fundraiser modeled on the kitschy game show designed for steel-toed chefs. The show’s over-the-top (but charming) host, Takeshi Kaga, claims to have envisioned the whole battle royale in something like a food-hazed trance before designing his own “Kitchen Stadium” to house the show. But you don’t have to travel all the way to Japan to experience Kaga’s stadium or the storied wars between chefs: There’s a new battle in your own back yard. Chefs from Bonefish Grill and Mura will take on the flame and the specialized produce of North Hills Farmers’ Market at Raleigh’s own version of the Iron Chef Competition. The winner must slam out a dish that excels in all elements: creativity, sumptuous taste and delicate presentation. Cheer on the chefs and sample their handiwork from 10 a.m. to noon for $5. All proceeds will benefit Interfaith Food Shuttle. Kathy Justice
