McIntyre’s Fine Books–Baltimore Sun journalist Dan Fesperman’s novel once again acquaints his lucid knowledge of current events and their context with his imagination for entirely possible plots: An American translator at the clandestine terrorist prison in Cuba gets caught in a bureaucratic upheaval. Fesperman reads in Durham at The Regulator on Friday, July 21 at 7 p.m. and today at McIntyre’s at 11 a.m.

Bickett Gallery–“People who like the music they play go there and they wind up seeing modern dance for the first time in their lives,” modern dancer Renay Aumiller told Byron Woods last week, talking about the access point Indies winner Bickett Gallery has provided for her work. “It’s opened that art for people who wouldn’t necessarily ever know it existed.” Aumiller returns to the space for a 7 p.m. performance tonight.

Donovan Carless
Wetlands–Donovan Carless emerged from Kingston as partner to crucial figures Prince Buster and Lee “Scratch” Perry, and led the Soul Syndicate Band through several hits and accolades in the ’70s. Though it’s little known outside reggae circles, he has lived in Raleigh since ’78. He’s joined here by reggae’s future promise in the Triangle in a full lineup billed as Reggae Relief Jamfest. Get there early for full vibrations, starting with Sista Fiyah and Dub Addis. The doors open at 8 p.m. and show costs $12. –Chris Toenes
