We’ll refrain from referring–as one local paper did–to the near-simultaneous visit from Green Day and Avril Lavigne as a one-two punch of punk rock. (If PIL and The Buzzcocks dropped by–then, it would be tempting.) Nevertheless, the two acts represent some of the more cutting edge music to make it to the area’s large venues this season. Avril’s opening act Gavin DeGraw takes the stage at Alltel Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 6:30 p.m. On the other side of the capital city, the oh-so-misunderstood neo-punks in Green Day rock the RBC Center, with openers Jimmy Eat World starting at 7:30 p.m. Youth angst and catchy melodies, all wrapped up in time to still get to school in the morning. Modern punk indeed.
