Durham
Spring Awakening
Sheafer Theater, Duke CampusNo, it won’t have the Duncan Sheik soundtrack or the Bill T. Jones choreography of the Broadway version, which took a fistful of Tonys last year. But with Jeff Storer at the helm of Frank Wedekind’s gritty, sexually frank stage play (which scandalized both New York and Berlin when it opened), we expect to see how far our culture hasand hasn’tprogressed from the repressive world that a group of German adolescents confronted as they struggled to come of age at the close of the 19th century. Through April 13; visit www.duke.edu/web/theaterstudies for more info. Byron Woods

Raleigh
Pickin’ for the Pets
Lincoln TheatreBe a pup’s or kitty’s greatest hero at this fundraiser for the Raleigh chapter of the SPCA. Twang and bluegrass masters gather to help those with paws and claws, from the backwoods symphonies of Virginia’s Jackass Flats to the winsome textures of Georgia’s IIIrd Time Out and the steel-energy of Raleigh’s No Strings Attached. Other local favorites include sleek string masters Kickin’ Grass and the dexterous, country stomp and twang of the Cadillac Stepbacks. Raleigh roots-enthusiasts Shotgun Romance warm up the stage at 2:30 p.m. Ten bucks will get you in the door. Kathy Justice
