The Pour HouseOur own Regina Hexaphone and Salt Lake City’s Band of Annuals both sweep generous textures around already graceful melodies: Led by Sara Bell’s easy air, Regina Hexaphone clutches pop music at the core, while Band of Annuals carefully builds outward from a sturdy country bedrock. Though the young unit claims six members, its studied restraint is uncommon in upstart alt.country, augmenting acoustic moans and shuffles only to fulfill the song, not the players’ self-perceptions. Raleigh Little TheatreCalled “wonderful and very funny” by The New Yorker, Radio Gals has proven a hit at regional theaters across the countryand now, it’s coming to the Triangle with Raleigh Little Theatre’s production. Featuring a book, music and lyrics by the Red Clay Ramblers’ Mike Craver and Pump Boys & Dinettes‘ Mike Hardwick, Radio Gals tells of a retired 1920s music teacher named Hazel C. Hunt who opens her own radio station in her living room, complete with an all-girl orchestra called the Hazelnuts.
