Sweet Honey in the Rock

Duke GardensWarm, complex and beautiful, Sweet Honey in the Rock is a national treasure. The female African-American a cappella group formed in 1973 and recently performed in Obama’s White House for Black History Month. With two original members remaining, five voices join together, singing gospel, blues and jazz-influenced numbers, their overlapping harmonies recalling a pipe organ in a country church. The sixth member of the ensemble interprets songs into sign language, suggesting truth needn’t yield to one language. This free performance commemorates the 75th anniversary of Duke Gardens.
