N.C. MUSEUM OF HISTORYTar Heel treasure Benton Flippen is an 87-year-old fiddle player learned in Surry County. He’s the lone survivor of one of the most influential schools of ol’ time musicians (including Tommy Jarrel and Kyle Creed) ever to emerge from the state, and he perseveres at square dances and fiddler conventions with his Smokey Valley Boys. The Boys are younger Surry apostles who inherited much of their repertoire from Flippen. With two guitars and a banjo, they pick and chug as he glides his bow in double-stop style over his strings, carrying tunes that ignite dance and wonder. BROAD STREET CAFÉHats off to the Broad Street Café for not only bringing music back to what I’ll always think of as the Under the Street block in Durham but also for making sure there’s music for all ages. Case in point: Once a month, the good Baron offers a Sunday afternoon lesson in Sunshine Rock and Roll 101. The first note sounds at 4:30 p.m. $3 per child, with kids under three in free.
