Center for Documentary StudiesDurham native and Peabody-winning producer James Blue returns to his roots for a special advance screening of excerpts from his new Discovery Channel miniseries, The People’s Republic of Capitalism. Led by Ted Koppel, who describes it as “the most extensive project I’ve ever undertaken in its reporting and production,” People’s Republic consists of four hour-long segments exploring the complex economic relationship between China and the United States.
The documentary, which took a year to make, offers a unique insight into the increasingly intricate web of economic and cultural connections between the U.S. and China including Mexicans in North Carolina who are involved in US/ China tradeand the effects of these connections on both countries. The free screening is open to the public, is at Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies and is presented by the Center and the Discovery Channel with support from the Film/ Video/ Digital Program, the Asian/ Pacific Studies Institute and the Department of Asian and African Languages and Literature, all at Duke University. It includes a Q&A with Blue moderated by Ralph Litzinger, associate professor of cultural anthropology and director of the Asian/ Pacific Studies Institute at Duke University.
